Lehigh launches ‘sustainable’ cement for Prairies

The parent company promises carbon-neutral concrete by 2050.
Lehigh Hanson’s Edmonton plant has launched EcoCem Plus, a blended Portland limestone cement (PLC) now available across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, which promises a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to typical concrete.
The ‘all-in-one’ cement is produced by inter-grinding clinker, fly ash, limestone and gypsum at the Edmonton plant, reducing the need for additional silos and co-ordination of deliveries at plants and project sites. Lehigh reports it outperforms traditional high-sulphate-resistant (HS) cement in resistance to the Prairies’ common threat of sulphate attack.
An environmental product declaration (EDP) reports EcoCEM Plus’ carbon footprint is more than 22% lower than Lehigh’s general-use (GU) cement and 32% lower than the current industry average. HeidelbergCement, Lehigh’s parent company, has committed to reducing 30% of its carbon emissions by 2025 and providing carbon-neutral concrete by 2050.
